Charles Dodgson - a problematic Pre-Rapaehlite photographer

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1832-1898), best known as Lewis Carrol , author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the looking glass, and what Alice found there (Carroll 1866 & 1872), was also a pioneer photographer and member of the Pre-Raphaelite group of artists during the mid 1800s (Ovenden 1972, British Council 1982, Bartram 1983). During 1968 a poster was produced for a series of concerts held at the Avalon Ballroom, San Francisco, between 28-30 June and featuring rock bands the  Youngbloods , Santana Blues Band and It's A Beautiful Day , supported by the Garden of Delights light show. This poster is reproduced above. The artwork was by David Warren and L. Kent Hollister, in what appears to be a one-off collaboration. In 1977 Sydney artist Toni Robertson - at the time a member of the Earthworks Poster Collective working out of the Tin Sheds at the University of Sydney - produced a silkscreen poster with an anti-nuclear theme. The work was cleverly based around the famous Mad Hatter's Tea Party image from Lewis Carroll's 1865 fantasy fictional  Alice in Wonderland. The Robertson poster was entitled Tea and Yellowcake - they will do anything we let them get away with . It is a classic of the era and typical of the richness and variety of posters coming out of the Earthworks Poster Collective during the 1970s.
